I was looking for a decent sushi restaurant in Coquitlam and I was introduced to Matoi Sushi by a few of my friends who live in the tri-cities. Matoi Sushi is just a close walking distance away from Coquitlam Centre. They’re located in a strip mall by the corner of Westwood Street and Lougheed Hwy. The restaurant is fairly small and but there are quite a few number of tables in the restaurant itself. There are 2 large group booths that could seat about 6 people and then 1 party room at the back of the restaurant that seats 8-10 people.
When you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by friendly staff and you could see the open sushi bar by the corner of the restaurant where the sushi chefs are preparing the sushi. Make sure you check out the daily special menu on a small white board tucked at the corner of the sushi bar to see what’s on special that day. They have quite a nice selection on the white board so you can easily decide what you want to order.
Their menu has a wide selection of different types of sushi, sushi rolls, special rolls, rice bowls (donburi), noodles, hotpot, and appetizers. Don’t forget to check out their paper menu which is additional to their regular menu book. That special paper menu has all different kinds of unique Japanese dishes that are not on the regular menu. The special menu offers dishes that are very rare that you don’t see them at other Japanese restaurants in the lower mainland. The prices on the menu is not exceptionally expensive either. It is quite a decent price for the amount of food you get compared to other high-end Japanese restaurants, such as Miku, toshi sushi or Minami.
I had a party of 8 people and our bill only came out to be $180 for the amount of food we ordered. I didn’t take a picture of all the food we ordered but we had almost 10 dishes from the menus and the price was pretty decent considering we had 8 people worth of food. Some of the food we ordered that I didn’t take a picture of included: Deluxe Assorted Sashimi, Asari Saka Mushi (clam in japanese wine – Sake), Beef Yakisoba, Unaten Roll (oh my god! This was amazing! You should order it if you love Unagi.), and a party tray!
Here are some of the dishes that we ordered and I took a picture of:

Overall, the food was fabulous and the prices were very decent and reasonable. Compared to other regular japanese restaurants, Matoi Sushi is a little more expensive but it is definitely worth every penny that you spend in the restaurant. I can guarantee you leaving very satisfied and happy with the food that you order from them. That’s just my opinion but of course, everyone has different perspective on Japanese food.
Definintely give this restaurant a try! It is a hidden gem in the heart of Coquitlam!
